Book Reviews

BOOK REVIEWS

Round of applause to Lyn Hywelalyn who won a prize for commenting on last weeks blog topic.

Today I'd like to discuss book reviews. If you look up book reviews it’ll say ‘A book review is a form of literary criticism in which a book is analyzed based on content, style, and merit.’

Now, tell me, how many of you have had a review based on none of the afore mentioned?

A review, if done well, points out strengths and weaknesses of the novel. It should include a statement of what the author has tried to do, evaluate how well the author has done it, and then give evidence to support that evaluation.

Here is an example of a bad review. NOT because it said my book sucked lol because the review followed no guidelines.
1.She started off saying I don’t like the paranormal genre. NOT a good start. It tells me she is going to hate it regardless.
2. She said she doesn’t know why it’s called a novel, as it’s only got 150 pages. It should be a novella. Mmm now she is ansy about the book being called a book!

I won’t bore you to death with the whole review, which sort of morphed into a critique in the end. Suffice to say she sat on her far too high reviewers pedestal, annihilated my characters, and said she didn’t care if they lived or died.
Not the review I'd hoped for!

I could have been very upset by this snarky review. I could have emailed her and ranted. Did I? No! Why? It wasn’t because of that stupid protocol that tells us never to argue with a reviewer if they give you a bad review. Let me tell you, if I think a review is unfair, or the person doesn’t understand the book enough to give a competent review, I’ll jolly well tell them so.
I said nothing because the person was an author who I felt had no understanding about how to review. So what would be the point of me asking her for a more detailed literary evaluation on why the story didn’t work for her, rather a than a rant about how much she hated it?

If, like me, you are using peer reviews because commercial reviewers are swamped, you need to be prepared for your author ‘friend’ to be honest. I would hate to receive a gushing review because the person was afraid I’d fall out with them if they didn’t.
I try to do one review a month. I am honest and straight down the line. If you’re a friend or a random author, it matters little to my opinion of your work. So beware if you ask me for a review. I will give an honest one.

Getting back on topic. We have all had horrible reviews at some point of our writing career. If you haven’t, well done, you are a super star. Be proud. But, if like me, you have, let’s break down what a review actually is. It is ONE person’s opinion. That’s it. Not the end of the world. No, you’re not a sucky author to be hated for evermore. No you should not put down your virtual pen and disappear into the ether. You can't please the whole world. Take it from a person, me, who has tried.

Today, I’d like to hear from authors who have received a review that they thought was a little bit unfair as the reviewer just didn’t ‘get’ the book. OR it was just unfair. No names or flames please. Just your opinion on the review.

Leave any links to reviewers you care to share, with your comments. They will get transferred to my author blog
Which helps other authors along the rocky path of the writers world.. The best comment will win a prize from me.

Enjoy your day

Sunday's Stillpoint - Letting Go

Happy Father's Day to you all.  Today is our culture's day to honor the outer father, whether biological or adopted. Our father's hopefully teach us to navigate the outer life - bringing clarity of mind, goal orientation and direction, and offering new and exciting experiences to our developing psyche.  Instilling positive masculine energy to the young psyche allows a strength of purpose to unfold, bringing the individual's gifts into focus.  This is a process that continues throughout life, whenever needed positive masculine energy is found.

The inner Masculine that we carry forward into our own creativity is based on experiences with father figures and masculine energy in your life.  I am stunned this morning by the sudden, deeply felt recognition of another area that needs to be culled, in order to recreate my own developing inner masculine. This is a delicate surgery.

A very wise person commented anonymously on my last post, which was May 29th.  I was writing about letting go of my dream project, a small Jungian journal called Psyche's Journey  Opening to the Mystery.  Letting go seems to be the operative word here!  Anonymous writes:  "Yes, there are times to let go. But I can't help but see there is too much heart in this project for you to just abandon it. I wonder, are you really and truly ready to leave it? Or are you holding on too tightly? Are you not adapting? Are you controlling? Are you stuck on what you want it to be other than letting it grow? Is this just the first hurdle? Sometimes when we hit that first resistance it seems like the end."

Perhaps the letting go need not be of the journal itself.  Maybe I am being concrete, holding on too tightly to the way in which I envisioned Psyche's Journey originally.  I am being rigid ( a trait of my father) when I need to Open to the Mystery, so that Psyche's Journey can continue on.  What a seriously awesome realization.  Thank you Anonymous!  Your inner masculine sees my gifts, and is encouraging me to continue my development.

My own father was very inventive.  He worked in the field of communications; first telephones as a lineman, and ultimately he worked in fiber optics, installing the underground communications systems at both DisneyWorld and for the Space Shuttle landing pads all over the world.  His work was both detailed and concrete, and yet he was a creative person person who adapted to the changing world around him, (well at least in the realm of his career!)

Today, I will honor my father's good qualities:  his creativity, his ability to adapt, his perseverance, his love of words and nature, his intellect, his dedication to his family.  At the same time, I will endeavor to let go of the qualities that no longer fit my own psyche's journey.  Letting go of rigidity, anger, fear and over-controlling the outcomes so that my will be first on the list.

What are the gifts and challenges you received from your father?  How are they related to your creative life?  Send me your stories...

Psyche's Journey has a new blog, which has been waiting in the wings for the right time.  Today is the day!  To see more go to: http://psychesjourney.blogspot.com/

Thank you again, to all that responded to my last post.  If you would like to respond personally, my email address is:  dnevin313@comcast.net.  Love to you all!  Dorica

Authors Promoting Authors with Laura Kaye and Hearts in Darkness

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind;
and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.
~William Shakespeare

Makenna James thinks her day can’t get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.

Caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he’s terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he’s trapped in his own worst nightmare.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common.
In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

Book Covers

Good Morning everyone.
I hope today brings you all some sunshine. A few weeks ago we spoke about the pitfalls of titles. Now I am going to get onto the topic of covers! It is a topic
that really gets me going. Covers are one of THE most important things to ever compliment your book. Most published authors have a say in their cover, but are then too worried of upsetting the publisher to say, actually, I don’t like it. Unlike me, the big mouth woman who always voices her opinions. It’s one of my many flaws! I have a golden rule. If you don’t want the truth, don’t ask me.

Now, back to covers. How many of you have been attracted to a book cover, only to find it relates to nothing about the story? I’m a sucker for Historical romance. I was in Waterstone and a cover of a woman in a regency dress caught my eye. I picked it up, read the blurb, only to find it was a ‘who done it murder mystery’!! What the hell?? Which brings me to one of my book covers. The artist who did the cover was absolutely brilliant, but the picture was nothing to do with my story. I immediately sent back an email saying its great, but no, not for my book. So after a flurry of emails, the publisher said, ‘what do you want to have?’ Perfect! They should ALL say those immortal words. I told them and my perfect cover was born. How many authors have felt pressured to have covers they don’t really like?

Who has stood up and said ‘no’ I don’t want that one?
Who has had no imput in their covers? Who has actually made their own?

Now we get on to self published authors. Power to them. That’s what I say. They have to make their own covers. Eeek. Where would you start. Does anyone have any helpful links for those who wish to self publish? My link is for Jimmy Thomas. Most authors know him. Not only is he drop dead gorgeous, he is a lovely guy who always takes time to have a chat. One of his secret's...not widely known......is that he’s addicted to chocolate!! That makes him doubly nice in my books.Excuse the pun.

Which brings me to a little story about young Jimmy. I was ogling an author’s cover on Facebook (as you do). It was of a rather dashing hero holding a semi conscious woman. I commented, thinking the picture was just an artist’s vivid imagination, ‘If I fainted I wonder if he would pick me up and carry me off’ and suddenly Jimmy commented, if you lived near me, of course I will. OMG. I nearly wet my drawers. The cover model was a real live person. AND he was talking me!!! We had a lovely pm chat. Of course I knew he was being nice to promote his wares, but boy, did I mind. HELL NO!!!!! I’d share my chocolate bar with him any day! I’m sure an erotica author could make a story from that comment lol

Ahem, anyway, to get back on track, his covers are stunning. So do go and check him out. He’ll pose for any genre and really take your ideas on board. He’ll be on the thread, if he's not too busy, to answer your questions or just have a chat about book covers. His has a fab calender out and the proceeds go to a local animal shelters that he supports. So know, if you buy one, you will also be helping a good cause.

So here is my question for today. Who has picked up a book, loved the cover, then found the story didin't compliment it at all? If you are an avid reader, does it infuriate you or are you not that bothered? Tell us.
As usual, prizes to be won for the most helpful comment or productive link.

Authors Promoting Authors with Susan Roebuck and Perfect Score

This is the tale of two men fighting to find their worth in a worthless world.

Feckless, exasperating Alex Finch is a rich, handsome and talented singer/songwriter who longs for two things: a career as a professional rock singer, and to have his love for Sam Barrowdale reciprocated. But drifter Sam's two aims are simply to earn enough money to pay his sister's medical bills and to hide from the world his reading/writing and speech disability. At this time the word "dyslexia" is generally unknown so to most people he's just a "retard". From the severe knocks life's dealt him, Sam's developed a tough outer coating and he has no time for a spoilt, selfish guitar player.

Despite his defects, Alex's love for Sam never wavers and when Sam unexpectedly disappears, Alex begins a somewhat bungling quest to find him, only to discover that Sam has a fearful enemy: Alex's powerful and influential yet sociopathic uncle.

As Alex spirals downwards towards alcoholism, many questions need answering. Just why did Alex's evil uncle adopt him at age eleven yet deny him any affection? And what's the mystery behind Alex's father's death?
Both seem to face unbeatable odds. Are they doomed to follow separate paths forever?s, exasperating Alex Finch is a rich, handsome and talented singer/songwriter who longs for two things: a career as a professional rock singer, and to have his love for Sam Barrowdale reciprocated. Food for Thought

Delving into the unknown

Todays topic is a little...well, off book topic.LOL I thought we'd have a break from book talk, although, thi might interest any paranormal readers/authors.Firstly, let me explain what the word ‘paranormal’ means. It’s an item, event or vision which is unsolved by science or cannot be explained by it. In other words, its seen, but not really believed.

Paula Martin won a prize last week for the best comment. yaaaay...claps very loudly. Well done you.

As well as being an author of Paranormal Romance novels, I’m also a working medium and have been teaching many metaphysical subjects for over twenty five years. In all that time I have met hundreds of people, all with different opinions on the subject. Let me say, it is perfectly okay not to believe in the after life, but it is not okay to mock those who do. So Please do comment, but be aware of others feelings.

Orbs or spirit lights have always been around us. They are spiritual energy - usually the first stage of manifestation. They are quite beautiful, with harmonious hues of rainbow colours. Some, well formed orbs, will even show features within them.

Sceptics believe orbs are dust particles caught on camera or faults occurring from digital photography technology- especially when using a flash. But how can they explain away orbs seen by the naked eye? I have seen them myself. Many photos contain these phenomena. I bet if you check your pictures, you'll spot some. The orbs can be passed relations or loved ones who have manifested themselves in the photographs, just so you can see they are still around you. The one in this picture was taken in a park that’s just behind me. When blown up it looked truly magnificent.

Now for those who are wondering, there is a big difference between Ghosts and Spirits. Ghosts haunt, while spirits are interactive. Ghosts manifest from residual energy. You can't interact with them because it would be like trying to speak to an actor in a movie you’re watching. What you’re seeing is a sort etheric play. An event in a person’s life that's so traumatic that they leave behind an energy blueprint of it, which replays over again. This is why people say they see a specific ghost every night at a house, castle etc. It just stares out of the window, walks down a hallway and so on and so forth. But it doesn’t say anything to the person viewing it. That's because the ‘Ghost’ can't see/hear/feel you. You’re not part of their event.Spirits are people who have gone to the other side of life. BUT, I must stress, just because they have crossed over, it doesn't make them suddenly become all knowing super heroes. Their personality doesn't change just because they've died. If they helped you in life with good advice, they will still do that spirit side. If they always steered you wrong, they will continue to do that from the other side. In my experience, spirit people come back with messages for their loved ones because they might be able to help, give comfort, release that person form their debilitating grief, Tell them 'I'm all right'.

Which reminds me of a story, TV medium Colin Fry, once told. He had a communication from someones son from spirit who came to speak to his mother and father. Whilst they understood the message, they didn't recognise the handsome, upright man who gave the message. Colin said to the spirit man they don't know you. The man said they will know me like this. His image changed to that of a man with severe Downs syndrome. The parents suddenly realised their son was more than all right. His spirit was whole again.

When people lose a limb, many say they can still feel it. I believe this is because the spirit is still whole. What they feel is their spiritual limb. Death is NOT the end of who we are. It's the beginning of a wondrous journey to find out who we can be.

Do you hve a story to tell? Have you incorporated it into parts of your books? The best ones will get a spotlight on my spiritual blog. So feel free to share them today. If you want to know about my paranormal life. Pop here.

Six of A Story: Conrad Jones and The Child Taker

Today on Six of A Story, I welcome Conrad Jones.
Conrad is the author of eight stand alone novels and a horror Thriller, Nine Angels. He is also the author of the biography of three time world champion, Russ Williams.
I asked Conrad for a quirky thing about him and he replied with,

"Quirky thing about me? Erm I wrote a horror novella this year Nine Angels where the heroine is my Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Evie Jones.....she`s a nutcase ha ha !!
Evie Jones is a rescue dog who loves people despite being abused and used to breed fighting dogs. Humans are fine however everything else that moves needs to be killed immediately ! She is difficult to manage but so cute and she is the perfect heroine for Nine Angels.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0045OUOIA
"
I asked Conrad about his newest release, THE CHILD TAKER

1. The Child Taker is a thriller that focuses on a pretty serious topic, the plight of abducted children. Why did you want to write a tale involving this serious issue?

The Child Taker is book six in the series but it was always the first one I wanted to write. In 2007 I set off on an 11 week tour of the USA. The day before we flew a little girl was taken from a hotel room and the news was full of the search for her. The coverage in the US was sparse but we watched it every day hoping for good news but it never came. I wrote the Child Taker for her I think, as it touched me. I am from Liverpool and there have been several high profile abductions or murders over the last few decades and they always stay with you.

2. Can you tell us a little bit about the characters that are in The Child Taker?

The characters in The Child Taker are varied. The main bad guy is a real bad guy. He takes children to order for a people trafficking ring run by the mafia in Morocco. They smuggle drugs and people to and from North Africa and human life has little value to them. The main focus is a family who leave their twins asleep in a tent and when they check on them they are gone.
The twins are the grandchildren of Major Stanley Timms, leader of a Special Forces unit and as the police investigation flounders, he sends his unit to find the twins and a desperate search for them begins. The Taskforce are headed up by John Tankersley, `Tank` and he is the main protagonist throughout the series.

3. The Child Taker, is about five year old twins being abducted. Is there a reason why you chose twins as the victims in this story?

I have a brother and sister who are twins and it was a difficult subject to write about but the fact that they were together and not alone made it easier to write somehow!!

4. Why would someone, who has never read a thriller, read this book?

It is more than just a thriller I think, it is a piece of the news we see every day. It could be taken from the television tomorrow. I write stories which are about the world we live in now, current and realistic and very close to the edge. They are graphic and cutting, but real. I think The Child Taker appeals to a broad spectrum of readers and it out sells the other books by far. It has been number one in the kindle thriller law charts for over 150 days now, fingers crossed those readers will move on through the series !!

5. From the product description on
Amazon.co.uk, "Packed with action and twists..." Can you tell us one of the twists of this novel?
There are many but without giving the plot away, the twins are on holiday with their parents and the father`s brother and his wife. It transpires that the father has been having an affair with his brother`s wife and the family is torn apart by the abduction and the affair.

6. After someone has read this novel, What reaction do you hope for?
There have been several reactions to the ending, most love it, some hate it but it does provoke a reaction. There will be another book in the series soon, probably July time and it will be along a similar theme.

Would You Display This? Call for Hosts

                                                     Copyright Christopher Chamberlain

My husband is an artist.

Working with a variety of mediums he, draws, paints and illustrates, creates bookcovers, graphic arts, comic strips, artwork for kids' books, paganistic nature scenes and erotica art.

In pursuit of his art, sometimes this means doing things I'd just rather not do (but do them anyways...sure you know the deal). Like waddling through puddles in the pouring rain and torn up streets in search of triple A batteries and attending crowded events.

We thought this summer (the "we" in that is way more him than I) we would take his art to the festivals and fairs, not just for the chance to sell some artwork but for the promotion and exposure. Something we've been wanting to do for the past couple of years and this time around, the timing just works.

This past weekend, we were at one of these things and was told (about this piece. The one at the top of this blog post. This piece that was one out of about twenty that were on our table), "This is hardcore nudity. Please don't display it, its offensive to children".

The festivals, are great venues for us to sell artwork, gain exposure and promotion. We know how difficult these events can be. We have a good idea of the amount of work and time and effort that's involved in putting them together.  We get it. We also understand, about protecting the children from the shocking artwork, kind of.
That is to say, we understand what is a huge hit in NYC wouldn't have the same reaction at a family fun event. We get it and adjust what we bring to these fairs and festivals accordingly.
Before attending such an event, we always provide the requested information.
In other words, they knew what we were bringing to this particular event and the reaction was...well however you may want to fill in that blank.

For ourselves, we were bemused. And that led to thinking about and searching for venues and places that we could display and show and sell his art without worrying about the shielding of the eyes. Our bemused reaction after this weekend, led to heightened states of amusement. And concluded with us deciding to shorten the list of planned events we'd attend over the summer and focus on the bigger ones.

From our amusement and longing to want to showcase this branch of his art, we came up with the idea for this Not For Victorian Eyes Virtual Art Tour. The internet after all, is a great venue for the varied tastes.

As the artist's wife, I get a lot of questions. In this small way, I can answer, "No", to:
"Do you have a problem with your husband drawing naked women?"
Consider this, if he can't draw the human body, how on earth can he draw you the superhero for the charity auction  or the kids educational bookcover ?

If you like what "we" are doing, if you like the erotica branch of his artwork and if this incident even mildly offends your sensibilities (you know, what I didn't elaborate on here: the right or wrong of it, censorship, freedom of expression...), please join in.

And rest assured, the artist's wife knows all about it.

Not for Victorian Eyes Virtual Art Tour
Featuring the Erotica Art by Christopher Chamberlain
June 30th to August 1st 2011

Wanted: Hosts for the Not for Victorian Eyes Virtual Art Tour

Ideas for the Hosts:
  • The host may pick a piece to showcase on their blog or website, and ask the artist about it.
  • The host can interview the artist.
  • The host may feature a profile of the artist
All hosts who participate will receive an ACEO ORIGINAL by Christopher Chamberlain.
If interested, please send an email to : manyfacesart@gmail.com with your website or blog, interview questions and if you want to discuss a piece of art with him, please tell what piece or if you want to do something else, let us know that as well. We're open to all kinds of ideas and suggestions.

Awaken the Demon

Thank you Tina-Sue for allowing me time on your blog to showcase my latest release.
Awaken the Demon is the first book in my Demon series. It was originally written ten years ago and since then it's been the one novel that has stuck with me and is the closest to my heart. it came to me in a dream and wouldn't let me go until the story was done. Shortly after I finished writing it the second book, Offer the Demon popped into my head and shortly after that, the third book came barreling into my head.  Today, I'm going to share Awaken the Demon and since i'm in a good mood, I'll give away a copy to one lucky commenter who gives me the name of the name of the first book in my vampire series.

Can Missy deal with her new life, and the affection she is beginning to feel for Draco, or will her past come back to haunt her?
~Excerpt~

“I wanted to ask you a few questions.”
She turned her head to face him and the room began to swim before her. “Questions, always questions with you. Let me ask you one for a change. Why are you looking for a mate?”
“To share my life with, of course.”
“Why me?” Her vision was beginning to blur. Was this what being drunk was like? She’d never been before.
He blinked several times before responding. “You’re the only one of your kind.”
“And that’s it? You want me because I’m rare?”
“I did. Before I knew you. Where is this going, Missy?”
“I’m just curious if love played any part in this search for a mate. See, when I accepted Ronald’s proposal, I believed I was in love. I figured we would have a long, happy life together, have a few children, grow old and die together.” She looked over at Draco. “Well, that didn’t exactly work out, so I was just curious what your idea of happily-ever-after is?”
“I’ve never really given it any thought.”
“Well, I would think that would be something to think about when choosing a mate. However, I really don’t know what you feel, being a direct descendent of Satan and all. Can you feel?” she slurred.
“How did you find that out?”
“I have my ways,” she responded slyly. “Can you?”
“I didn’t come here to be grilled by you.”
“I wasn’t grilling you. I was just asking questions. What’s the matter, Draco? You don’t like being questioned?”
He got to his feet. “I think I’ll come back when you’re in a better mood.”
“Oh, don't go. I’m in a perfectly fine mood now, Draco.” She swaggered toward him.
“You’re drunk.”
“Yep, yep I am. Why is it I get the strangest urge to rip those clothes from your body and see what's hidden beneath all that black?” She ran a finger along his lapel. “Yet, at the same time, I want to vomit at your feet.”
“What sort of response were you expecting from that question? Or was it a rhetorical one?”
“Yeah, the last one,” she slurred.
“This is all new to you. It will take time for you to adjust.”
“Oh, I’ve grasped it all. I’m now a demon who craves flesh and blood and my future is filled with uncertainty, but one thing remains.” The tears came up and flooded her eyes despite her fight to withhold them. “I can never go home again.”
“Missy.”
“No.” She waved him off. “Leave me be. I need some time alone.”
“You keep pushing me away, yet it’s me you need.”
“I don’t need you.” She stepped away and was shocked when he yanked her back toward him. Before she knew it, his mouth was covering hers. She felt the heat scorch her from the middle of her belly and down. Something inside of her beckoned her to surrender.
“I have never wanted a woman’s lips before.” He ran his thumb over her lips. “Yours tempt me beyond reason.” With that said, he vanished.
She slumped to the floor, her eyes flooded with tears.
Now why did he have to do that?
