It's finally here. The competition of the year. I wish everyone the very best of luck and look forward to meeting the winning UK authors. Here is everything you need to know.
Elizabeth Newman is the Octagon Theatre Bolton's Associate Director. As well as directing productions she also runs the Theatre's new writing department. She has worked as a casting director for theatre and television and has been a lecturer and senior lecturer at various HE and FE facilities across the country.Elizabeth Newman, Head of the New Writing department at the Octagon Theatre, is on a quest. She is launching a competition to find three novelists who would be interested in coming to the Octagon to learn more about adapting their writing for the stage.
This competition has been inspired by her working with little ole me!! I have already been picked to join the chosen three at the Octagon in December 2011. Ms Newman is currently leading a team of eight playwrights to adapt Frank L Baum's classic novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, for the Octagon audience which will open on the 19th November 2011.
Today you can post your submissions on the Author promoting Authors comments section and if you miss this date, there is another on the 27th October. Winners will be announced on Thursday 10th of November 2011 on my blog and the APA site.
The UK winners will not only attend the day workshop at the theatre, with playwrights who adapted The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but they are also invited to see the show in the evening. How spectacular is that!! One international winner will have a skype session with Elizabeth about their novel.
PLEASE NOTE. Winners are responsible for their own travel arrangements to the Octogan on the day.
THE GUIDELINES ARE AS FOLLOWS.
You need to be a follower of my blog and this one. This is important as the two blogs are being monitored for author volume and submissions. So hit that follow button.
Genre exclusions for this competition are Erotica and Gay/Lesbian fiction, Horror, stories containing rape, child violence and racialism. Because of the deluge of negative comments last week I feel i mist make a point and say that these are the Theatres guidelines, NOT mine. Competitions exclude genres all the time. Because of the volume of emails that I am receiving about this competition, please do not contact me complaining about the exclusions. There are many competitions out there. I'm sure that you will find one that fits your genre.

Genre: Paranormal humour
ReplyDeleteIn NO more than 100 words write a short biography about yourself and why you would like to adapt your novel for the stage.
I am a Derbyshire woman with a series of humorous paranormal novels set in the mythical town of Laverstone, Wiltshire. The first of these, 'An Ungodly Child' won an award and was published in 2008. The publisher went under in 2010 and the novel will be re-released by Zumaya Publications LLC. I recently had two monologues performed by the Insignificant Theatre Company and I have to say, writing for the stage is the the best feeling ever. I've recently joined a scriptwriting course in an effort to pursue this and the chance to adapt 'An Ungodly Child' would be fantastic.
In NO more than 200 words write a synopsis of the novel you wish to adapt.
HAROLD is the son of LUCIFER but not, despite the wishes of the angels of
destruction (SENOY, SANSENOY and SEMANGALOF), the antichrist. They want him to start
Armageddon because (a) they’re bored and (b) they still have a chance of winning.
Harold is infected with a terminal disease by JEDITH, the angel of Pestilence. He is helped by ADA (his mother) and UNCLE FREDERICK to summon the demon Jasfoup for help. Jasfoup tells Harold he can extend his lifespan indefinitely. He takes Harold back in time to gather blood from his half-brother CAIN who, feeling the prick of a needle, brains his brother ABEL with a stick. Cain is cursed by God and becomes the first vampire and progenitor of GILLIAN, Harold’s new girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Uncle Frederick has an accident and dies but becomes an earthbound ghost, visible to those that have the Sight. Harold inherits Laverstone Manor but is threatened by
MR. MAN (Semangalof), whom he fights in a climactic battle until rescued from certain death
by the archangel AZRAEL.
He meets his father for the first time and demands 37 birthday presents.
Ada reassures him that he is not the antichrist. That was his sister.
'An Ungodly Child will be republished by Zumaya Publications in the spring of 2012
