My guest today is Christi McMillen, who has just published her first book, A FIRE WITHIN .
This interview was a lot of fun. I always enjoy meeting authors and learning about their work, I especially enjoy putting together these interviews, when the author is so passionate and enthusiastic about their book.
Christi's enthusiasm jumped off the screen and we wish her much success with her new first book.
Christi's quirky fact: "That would be that I am a very random person. My husband loves to say that I have lots of "shiny" moments. We can be talking and if something catches my attention, I am instantly diverted to it. (That would be my add kicking in). I have to make a list every day of things I need to do, otherwise, none of it will actually get done."

Rayna Daniels is a woman marked for death.
To escape the horrible fate two serial killers have planned for her, she finds herself depending on the unique assistance and protection of Detective Chase Stone.
Though her own abilities are powerful, Rayna and Chase learn that only together can they defeat the killers and find the fire within each other.
Can you tell us about Rayna?
Rayna is a writer that tends to stay away from people... just to keep her own sanity intact. She is a strong-willed woman who is happy with who she is but is surprised when she meets Detective Stone at the station. She's never had anyone be in her own head before and she isn't sure she likes it. Or him, for that matter.
Has Rayna ever had serial killers after her before? What did she do/what is it about her that has made her a target?
This was a first for her, no doubt. It was simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and even though she knew the city was being terrorized by the killing duo, she was still out... by herself. One on the killers has become obsessed with her to the point of throwing away everything he & his brother have done, just so that he can have her. With Detective Stone protecting her, she has to watch out for the serial killers who are tracking her and try to keep her thoughts (and hands) away from Stone.
Do Detective Chase Stone and Rayna already have an existing relationship when the book opens ?
No, they meet at the police station when he questions Rayna about escaping the killers. No one has ever been able to live, much less escape the two brothers who have joined forces and he realizes pretty quickly that she has "special talents". He can't help but be interested in a woman who, not only can see his thoughts (and what he would like to do to her) but send her own sensual thoughts to him as well. He makes the mistake of thinking she can't take care of herself though and gets a painful reminder that she is not a "shrinking violet".
Can you tell us a little bit about Rayna's special talents?
Rayna is a girl of "all trades". She is able to read minds within a short distance, move things by telekinesis and even produce light from her hands. It saps her energy though if she uses too much so she does try to keep a tight rein on it. Sometimes.... She might have anger management issues that should seriously be dealt with. Then again, most people don't deal with what she has too either.
If Detective Chase Stone, invited us all over for dinner, how would he entertain us?
Oh, he is a definite meat & potatoes kind of man. He loves his steak rare but will eat the salad.. with enough dressing on it to cover the green stuff. Just watch out for the dessert~ and never ask him if he wants to dine in or eat out.
What makes A Fire Within stand out from other books in the paranormal/romance genre?
A Fire Within is a novella that not only uses the brains' mysterious abilities, it has a heroine that can stand on her own, if she has to. She depends on Detective Stone but he depends on her just as much. I am a big believer in equality for my couples and Rayna proves she is tough and can hold her own when she needs to ( but loves that he is there to catch her)!

Sounds like quite an intriguing story. I'm guessing that you really love these characters, Christi!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Jason and C.S.? Thanks again for this interview, I really enjoyed doing it (as everybody can tell, lol). I do love my characters. I spend a lot of time thinking of how my characters will interact with others because I want them to feel "real" to you as you read the book. I want to draw you into their world so that it takes you away from whatever stress you have at that moment. Being a novella, it doesn't take as long to read as a full-length but it does get you away for a while.
ReplyDeleteI owe everybody an apology though b/c I gave C.S. an incorrect link to my fanpage. This is the correct link (just in case you want to look at the tidbits of the sequel, Crossing Steele). I don't THINK the link will be able to just be clicked on but you can still copy/paste it..
