Would You Display This? Call for Hosts

                                                     Copyright Christopher Chamberlain

My husband is an artist.

Working with a variety of mediums he, draws, paints and illustrates, creates bookcovers, graphic arts, comic strips, artwork for kids' books, paganistic nature scenes and erotica art.

In pursuit of his art, sometimes this means doing things I'd just rather not do (but do them anyways...sure you know the deal). Like waddling through puddles in the pouring rain and torn up streets in search of triple A batteries and attending crowded events.

We thought this summer (the "we" in that is way more him than I) we would take his art to the festivals and fairs, not just for the chance to sell some artwork but for the promotion and exposure. Something we've been wanting to do for the past couple of years and this time around, the timing just works.

This past weekend, we were at one of these things and was told (about this piece. The one at the top of this blog post. This piece that was one out of about twenty that were on our table), "This is hardcore nudity. Please don't display it, its offensive to children".

The festivals, are great venues for us to sell artwork, gain exposure and promotion. We know how difficult these events can be. We have a good idea of the amount of work and time and effort that's involved in putting them together.  We get it. We also understand, about protecting the children from the shocking artwork, kind of.
That is to say, we understand what is a huge hit in NYC wouldn't have the same reaction at a family fun event. We get it and adjust what we bring to these fairs and festivals accordingly.
Before attending such an event, we always provide the requested information.
In other words, they knew what we were bringing to this particular event and the reaction was...well however you may want to fill in that blank.

For ourselves, we were bemused. And that led to thinking about and searching for venues and places that we could display and show and sell his art without worrying about the shielding of the eyes. Our bemused reaction after this weekend, led to heightened states of amusement. And concluded with us deciding to shorten the list of planned events we'd attend over the summer and focus on the bigger ones.

From our amusement and longing to want to showcase this branch of his art, we came up with the idea for this Not For Victorian Eyes Virtual Art Tour. The internet after all, is a great venue for the varied tastes.

As the artist's wife, I get a lot of questions. In this small way, I can answer, "No", to:
"Do you have a problem with your husband drawing naked women?"
Consider this, if he can't draw the human body, how on earth can he draw you the superhero for the charity auction  or the kids educational bookcover ?

If you like what "we" are doing, if you like the erotica branch of his artwork and if this incident even mildly offends your sensibilities (you know, what I didn't elaborate on here: the right or wrong of it, censorship, freedom of expression...), please join in.

And rest assured, the artist's wife knows all about it.

  1. I have to say I am not a fan of erotica, but know some fab authors who write it. I even critique it, so I'm not prudish. BUT, I don't like the picture of the woman with her drawers around her thighs. She is at a desk, not even in a bedroom. It looks a bit tawdry. Sorry, I don't mean to offend. Great artist. I just think there are far more better erotic poses. This one just brings porn to mind, not erotica.

  2. To me, expression is just that, the freedom to show whatever your creative muse guides you to create. I understand subjective opinions, and everyone has a right to those too, but not to judgement. As an erotic author, I deal with that daily, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Can't wait to have Christopher on my blog :) As well as being a great artist, he has a great heart!

  3. Being one of these festivals organizers, I see the point. But if you felt that this festival had a well mixed audience and wasn't only family-centered and you were upfront about what you were bringing, the reaction was unfounded.

I like what you're doing and would display this on my blog.

  4. I would definitely host Christopher. I love his art and I have to agree with Kiki here. It's all about expression. I would also like to say, because I read it somewhere that this wasn't suitable for a kids book, obviously this wouldn't be for a kids book. The statement was just being made that he does cover art for kids books. Not this particular piece. I think the art is great, of his own inspiration and I would love to see much more. Porn would be if she was in the picture with a man, or another woman, in my mind. Just my two cents. I would be happy to host him :).

  7. I cannot believe that the sculptor of Venus di Milo could ever run his hands over those voluptuous curves without getting an erotic buzz (which his wife probably benefited from that evening). The same applies to the many beautiful female forms in the Louvre.

The erotic has always been a subject for fine art, and one of the best. I want more erotic art (and writing) everywhere. And less blood and violence.

Good luck Christopher, and I can arrange an exhibition for you in Cooktown, Queensland whenever you like!

this is porn, not art, however you spin it.

  9. As a publisher of erotica and erotic romance I have to point out that the lines these days as to whether the art, be it writing, painting or drawings, are erotic or porn.
With the levels of acceptability in the reading market being increased to a level much higher then what it was only a few years ago I have to argue the critique of porn to this incredible drawing. It is far from pornographic in my opinion.
Count Naughty Nights Press in as a very willing host to your tour!
I hope your husband continues this venue of beautiful depicting of the human body. It is simply something that although can not be captured by just anyone, this artist seems to have an eye for what is beautiful.
We may even have to begin discussions on purchases for cover art in the near future!!

  10. This is gorgeous. Best of luck on the tour. I hope you find the right places to show this and don't listen to all the stuffy voices, even those who claim they aren't prudish or if its in the bedroom that's all right. Absolute nonsense.

  12. As a new writer in the erotica field, I'm facing much of the same things you say here. While we're taught nowadays that sex is healthy and the human body natural and beautiful, our puritan heritage doesn't seem to go away.

I think the artwork is beautiful AND sexy. I love the "Not for Victorian Eyes" tag for your tour. That's a great way to put it.

When my kids encountered any kind of art with nudity or sexual poses, I just tried to explain it as part of the human experience that they'll come across when they're older. I didn't want to make it seem ugly at all. Yet, I find I don't want them to read MY erotica. I think they like to think of me as MOM.

Sex is still a difficult subject!
