Happy Father's Day to you all. Today is our culture's day to honor the outer father, whether biological or adopted. Our father's hopefully teach us to navigate the outer life - bringing clarity of mind, goal orientation and direction, and offering new and exciting experiences to our developing psyche. Instilling positive masculine energy to the young psyche allows a strength of purpose to unfold, bringing the individual's gifts into focus. This is a process that continues throughout life, whenever needed positive masculine energy is found.
The inner Masculine that we carry forward into our own creativity is based on experiences with father figures and masculine energy in your life. I am stunned this morning by the sudden, deeply felt recognition of another area that needs to be culled, in order to recreate my own developing inner masculine. This is a delicate surgery.
A very wise person commented anonymously on my last post, which was May 29th. I was writing about letting go of my dream project, a small Jungian journal called Psyche's Journey Opening to the Mystery. Letting go seems to be the operative word here! Anonymous writes: "Yes, there are times to let go. But I can't help but see there is too much heart in this project for you to just abandon it. I wonder, are you really and truly ready to leave it? Or are you holding on too tightly? Are you not adapting? Are you controlling? Are you stuck on what you want it to be other than letting it grow? Is this just the first hurdle? Sometimes when we hit that first resistance it seems like the end."
Perhaps the letting go need not be of the journal itself. Maybe I am being concrete, holding on too tightly to the way in which I envisioned Psyche's Journey originally. I am being rigid ( a trait of my father) when I need to Open to the Mystery, so that Psyche's Journey can continue on. What a seriously awesome realization. Thank you Anonymous! Your inner masculine sees my gifts, and is encouraging me to continue my development.
My own father was very inventive. He worked in the field of communications; first telephones as a lineman, and ultimately he worked in fiber optics, installing the underground communications systems at both DisneyWorld and for the Space Shuttle landing pads all over the world. His work was both detailed and concrete, and yet he was a creative person person who adapted to the changing world around him, (well at least in the realm of his career!)
Today, I will honor my father's good qualities: his creativity, his ability to adapt, his perseverance, his love of words and nature, his intellect, his dedication to his family. At the same time, I will endeavor to let go of the qualities that no longer fit my own psyche's journey. Letting go of rigidity, anger, fear and over-controlling the outcomes so that my will be first on the list.
What are the gifts and challenges you received from your father? How are they related to your creative life? Send me your stories...
