Book Reviews

BOOK REVIEWS

Round of applause to Lyn Hywelalyn who won a prize for commenting on last weeks blog topic.

Today I'd like to discuss book reviews. If you look up book reviews it’ll say ‘A book review is a form of literary criticism in which a book is analyzed based on content, style, and merit.’

Now, tell me, how many of you have had a review based on none of the afore mentioned?

A review, if done well, points out strengths and weaknesses of the novel. It should include a statement of what the author has tried to do, evaluate how well the author has done it, and then give evidence to support that evaluation.

Here is an example of a bad review. NOT because it said my book sucked lol because the review followed no guidelines.
1.She started off saying I don’t like the paranormal genre. NOT a good start. It tells me she is going to hate it regardless.
2. She said she doesn’t know why it’s called a novel, as it’s only got 150 pages. It should be a novella. Mmm now she is ansy about the book being called a book!

I won’t bore you to death with the whole review, which sort of morphed into a critique in the end. Suffice to say she sat on her far too high reviewers pedestal, annihilated my characters, and said she didn’t care if they lived or died.
Not the review I'd hoped for!

I could have been very upset by this snarky review. I could have emailed her and ranted. Did I? No! Why? It wasn’t because of that stupid protocol that tells us never to argue with a reviewer if they give you a bad review. Let me tell you, if I think a review is unfair, or the person doesn’t understand the book enough to give a competent review, I’ll jolly well tell them so.
I said nothing because the person was an author who I felt had no understanding about how to review. So what would be the point of me asking her for a more detailed literary evaluation on why the story didn’t work for her, rather a than a rant about how much she hated it?

If, like me, you are using peer reviews because commercial reviewers are swamped, you need to be prepared for your author ‘friend’ to be honest. I would hate to receive a gushing review because the person was afraid I’d fall out with them if they didn’t.
I try to do one review a month. I am honest and straight down the line. If you’re a friend or a random author, it matters little to my opinion of your work. So beware if you ask me for a review. I will give an honest one.

Getting back on topic. We have all had horrible reviews at some point of our writing career. If you haven’t, well done, you are a super star. Be proud. But, if like me, you have, let’s break down what a review actually is. It is ONE person’s opinion. That’s it. Not the end of the world. No, you’re not a sucky author to be hated for evermore. No you should not put down your virtual pen and disappear into the ether. You can't please the whole world. Take it from a person, me, who has tried.

Today, I’d like to hear from authors who have received a review that they thought was a little bit unfair as the reviewer just didn’t ‘get’ the book. OR it was just unfair. No names or flames please. Just your opinion on the review.

Leave any links to reviewers you care to share, with your comments. They will get transferred to my author blog
Which helps other authors along the rocky path of the writers world.. The best comment will win a prize from me.

Enjoy your day

  1. I've no complaints - my first review by another author (not a comercial reviewer) gave me 5 stars for my June release of 'His Leading Lady'! http://paulamartinromances.webs.com/
Not sure just how I would react if someone slated my book.
But if they said they didn't like romances and then proceeded to review my book, I'd wonder why they were reviewing it in the first place!

  2. So far, I have no complaints about reviews. All I have gotten were good and I thought honest.

I think you have to be careful what reviewers you choose to send your novel or shorts to because of perhaps their perferred genres.

A memoir wouldn't go over well with a reviewer that does mostly paranormal romances.

Yes, I know to a reviewer this shouldn't make such a difference, but all are human and we all have our likes and dislikes.

But, no matter, I would like review guidelines followed and honesty. If my book sucks in their eyes, so be it.

So, like publishers. One will hate it, the next might love it.

  4. Hi Margaret - what a great topic!
Yes I could rant. I received one terrible review for the 'book of my heart' and that hurt. But like yours, the reviewer (and this was a 'professional' reviewer) hated the book, didn't get it and tore it to shreds. The only slightly redeeming feature was when she said 'some people might like it, but it wasn't to her taste.' and that was the nicest thing she said about it, so you can imagine what the rest of it was like. She accused me of contriving a 'twist ending' (which wasn't the case, it was really the only logical way to end the story.) Then she proceeded not only to reveal this supposed 'twist ending' but to give away most of the plot as well. At least I suppose it proved that she'd actually read it, even if she did hate it and missed its point entirely.

I did have another (unsolicited) terrible review for the same book on Amazon, but since this was a rant from one of those people who seems to make it their mission in life to give horrible 'reviews' I didn't take too much notice of that one. I've had four and five star reviews for it from other professional reviewers and from other authors so just made myself get over the hurt and concentrate on the remarks of people who said they loved it.

One thing I would say is if one has a less than glowing review, it's easier to take if they say why they didn't like it so one could at least bear that in mind for future books. My publisher sends our books to several professional reviewers, so we don't really have much choice in where they go, but luckily most of my reviews have been good. Bad ones do hurt!

For myself, I make it a point never to agree to review a book unless I'm pretty sure I will enjoy it. I won't lie and say a bad book is good, and I would hate to shatter an author's confidence when maybe someone else would have seen something in it I didn't!

  5. Yes, Lyn bad reviews do hurt, especially when they are not thought out properly. But as we authors are made of steel the bullets will bounce off and we will live to write again!

  6. I once had an F from a very frightening review site. The reader hated the book. She hated everything about it. And then she told the world what she hated about it. (The book is still being republished around the world and has recently been digitised by my publisher - I tell you this only so that you understand that a review is one person's opinion and has very little effect on sales.)

The same site has given me several of their acclaimed Desert Island Keepers and a pretty starry B+ for the latest.

If you put yourself out there you have to take the rough with the smooth.

  7. Margaret,
I'm a little late (just read the post on our EP loop for it)with a comment, but had to input anyway. I've been writing 39 years and have published 14 novels and 7 ss since 1984...I have had two books (Witches and Egyptian Heart) that have been LOVED by almost every reviewer that read them. But, strangely enough, when both books were released (or rereleased as Witches has been)I got, in both cases, a very quick review, on the same day as release actually, from one reviewer each that HATED the books and said terrible things about them...it hurt and tainted the release days for me on both books...but the weird thing was, both books AFTER that first awful ranting review were very well received, even LOVED, from then on and were, in the end, the most popular (and still are) of my 14 books. So...pooey, bad reviews....what are they anyway? I still scratch my head at those two terrible reviews. They didn't make sense. Kathryn Meyer Griffith

  8. My first review ever threw me for a loop because the rating wasn't as high as I'd wanted. Now when I go back, I view it as helpful cricisim which now I believe the reviewer was doing. But at the time, I cried because like Lyn says, it was the book of my heart. Now I realize what is one's person's treasure is another person's trash. I get wonderful reviews for the same book that might not do so well from another reviewer. Just takes toughening up the skin!
