Another Story Behind the Book with Michelle Davidson Argyle

Where did the idea for this story come from?

I got the idea for Cinders from my four-year-old daughter! She kept watching Disney's version of Cinderella over and over and one day I just though - wow, I what happened after Cinderella got married to her prince? The idea sprouted into a short flash fiction piece and then later into the novella.

How did your characters come to life?

Cinderella, or Christina as she is called in the book, came to life at first because she was already a created character whom everyone knows! It was interesting to start writing the story and have Christina come to life in a completely different way than I expected. Many people have described her as unlikable, but in a good way. She is very real in her personality and choices.

Blurb of your book

Cinderella's happily-ever-after isn't turning out the way she expected. With her fairy godmother imprisoned in the castle and a mysterious stranger haunting her dreams, Cinderella is on her own to discover true love untainted by magic.

  1. I'll never understand why I've read so many people make the comment that Christina is unlikeable but in a good way, unless it's simply discomfort with human imperfection and the unpredictable nature of reality. She is now, and I think always will be, one the the most truly likable characters I have ever read.

I root for characters a lot. I almost never like them. Michelle's Cinderella is a striking exception to that.

  4. Always interesting to read about where author's find their inspiration. I think so many of us have those little flashes of ideas but don't listen to that little voice inside our heads. Congrats on acting on that flash!!!

  9. I'm shocked anyone would think Christina is considered unlikable! I'm quite judgmental toward characters and I found her very real and very likable -- even when confused, uncertain, and torn about her feelings and choices. (Aren't we all?!)
