How do you write a review from an author who says, “I’m not a writer!”
And give a review of this type of book without giving away spoilers?
SENSITIVITY 101 FOR THE HETEROSEXUAL MALE Is an unique memoir.
With this book, Philip Nork has invited the reader into his life and like all life experiences, the stories that have emerged are ripe with feeling and diversity.
This book can be a little off-putting, it can be seen as some guy recalling every woman he ever met and writing a little bit about them.
Honestly, it took a couple of chapters to get past that concept.
As I continued to read, I realized obviously these women were memorable enough to leave strong impressions and teach some pretty strong life lessons.
Sensitivity 101 for the Heterosexual Male is reflections of a discovery of self and the quest for acceptance and finding happiness.
If you like memoirs that are honest, different and give you a peek into behind closed doors, this is a read for you.

Thanks for the honesty. I am guessing you are not from a broken family because all the e-mails I have recieved from those that are truly understand the desperate need for wanting to feel accepted and trying to be happy. If you read carefully you will see all the lessons learned in the early chapters come back in some way or another in other chapters. They all build on each other, like bricks in a foundation, and that forms the basis for who the character turns into.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you liked the book or not...but that is the beauty of reading and writing--everyone takes something different from each story.
Thanks again...
Phil's book "Sensitivity 101 for the Heterosexual Male" is one of those few books that I was not able to put down until I had read the last page. He possesses the ability to bare his soul. I found it very refreshing that he contacted these special women from his youth and included their comments so the reader was able to see both the male and female points of view. Phil, very candidly, tells of his desire to help others feel special and to fill a need for acceptance within himself.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to reading his next book.

I thought it was a rather fair review, although it does not seem like the author took it that way. I agree that it is difficult to take someone's memories of their life and then give a rating of whether or not it is an interesting read.
ReplyDeleteMr. Nork's response seems as though he was looking for a positive and glowing review, something perhaps to be used as a sales pitch?
It was not a bad review. There were no critical comments and it was definitely respectful of the fact that it is an autobiographical work. The retort appears quite critical of how closely the book was read. It's only common sense that any person, or animal, or building for that matter is built upon it's foundation.
And you know what? If someone took the time to read my work, I would be quite happy with it at that and not looking to find out whether they liked it or not. It's correct that someone takes something different from each story, but it's also equally correct that any one story is not for everyone.
I'm sorry that you took my response wrong. I am happy with the review, in fact using the last line as a quote. Maybe I WAS looking for something different in a review, this being my first one. I agree it was not a bad review. I do appreciate the time and effort it takes to do them and then the thought that goes into a response. I know I couldn't I do it. Again not upset at all!
ReplyDeleteMemoirs are very hard sales.
ReplyDeleteUnless you are famous or have a very large platform, or a cause, telling your life story and expecting that everyone can take something away from it or want to read all about it is very egotistical. This strikes me as the kind of book that could have been bounded nicely and given to family members. Also, I find the title very offensive. For that reason and the author's reaction I would not read this book. An author implying that the reviewer didn't read carefully? The comment about "guessing you are not..." is really something.
Kudos to you, APA and all differing personalities you put up with.
Very nice! This is a wonderful blog... I had a great time browsing and reading your posts. You may also drop by my site if you have time. It's about christian books . I'm sure you'd find my site useful.
ReplyDeleteIf the author hadn't commented in the way he did, I am sure a lot more people would voice support for this new book.
ReplyDeleteIt is true memoirs can be a tough sale, it is also true there is a narrow market for memoirs by "no-name's".
It is a NICE review. The reviewer clearly stated a)the effort not to give a way spoilers b) if you memoirs are your thing, add this one to your collection.
So congrats on the book and this review!
Phil's book, "Sensitivity 101 for the Heterosexual Male" is one I read with an open mind. I can appreciate the original style in which it is written and enjoyed reading each story and trying to anticipate the lesson that would be learned. I think adolescence is a challenge for most children and being a child of divorce and/or any other non-traditional family unit presents additional challenges for many individuals. I believe the book is one to which many can relate.
ReplyDeleteI believe Phil is a talented writer and look forward to reading his next book.
