Eagle At Midnight, Ava James

For Deryn Philips life has hit a record low.
After losing her parents in a car crash, she follows their last request and takes a trip to Wales.
But this is no ordinary trip, and there is more to her new mysterious male friend than she can believe.
Then again, if you are in a medieval castle in a foreign country, what's wrong with meeting a knight in shinning Armani?

Excerpt From Eagle At Midnight:
The tour group milled around on the lower floors and the castle grounds out of consideration to the group members of an advanced age. Craving solitude, Deryn decided to see the view from one of the towers. The gaggle of widows departed, and she turned back to the gravel paths in the inner bailey. Each path led to a different tower.

“So which tower is it going to be? Black, Chamberlain, Eagle, or Queen?”

“I suggest Eagle’s Tower,” a male’s voice recommended from behind her.

The smooth timbre and Welsh accent generated tingles down her spine.

Turning around, Deryn met stunning cerulean eyes set in chiseled features, paired with heart-stopping good looks. Hot didn’t even begin to cover the essence of this man. Her jaw slackened at the sight. Raw desire shot down her body. Her eyes wide, she drank him in inch by tailored inch. He wore his light grey suit with confidence, and his honey locks, pulled back from his face into a short ponytail, brushed the collar of his black shirt. A seductive grin crept across his sensual lips, and a sigh almost escaped Deryn’s lips.

Holy David Beckham! This man could be his long lost, even hotter brother. His tawny skin, muscular frame, and blond locks were a triple threat. It was too much…. He was too much.

“I….” I want you…. No, too forward. Damn, what was I saying?

Her mind turned to mush with one grin from him. She didn’t recognize this man from their tour group. There was no way he’d been in the group—she would have seen him.

“There’s a breathtaking view from the Eagle Tower . You can see clear across the sea.” The handsome stranger’s voice enchanted her. She stood stunned. “Oh, sorry. Llaw Gyffes.” He extended his hand. She didn’t immediately take it, so he reached down and took her hand into his gentle grip.

Every nerve in her body pulsed with excitement. When his hand made contact with hers, Deryn swore the air sizzled with heat. She watched in utter fascination as he brought her hand up to his mouth, his lips inches from her skin. The whole world stopped in that moment. She held her breath while he turned her hand. His satin lips made contact with the sensitive flesh of her wrist, and her knees nearly gave way. His eyes met hers, and she couldn’t restrain the sigh that rolled off her tongue.

“And you are?” His eyes sparkled with mischievous curiosity.

Wake up, Sleeping Beauty! He’s talking to you…answer him!

Deadly Secrets , Sylvia Dickey Smith

Rookie PI Sidra Smart thinks she knows where she’s headed. She’s divorced her preacher-husband, she’s inherited a private detective business, and she’s solved her first case. But then she moves into a ghost active house and discovers that the past holds the key not only to her future, but to the lives of innocent people trapped in an unholy web of deception that spans decades.

This mystery/suspense novel is set in a small Texas town where everyone knows everything about the other—or at least think they do—until the sins of the past catch up with the secrets of the present. Where yesterday’s lighthouses, yellow fever, and Civil War skirmishes play a significant role in uncovering the sins of today.

When Sid’s second case requires she clear the name of a dead man, she finds herself confounded by clues that lead nowhere. She battles her own prejudice, a burned-out office, the disappearance of a local preacher’s wife, and a midnight trip through a murky swamp before clues begin to fall in place. Then, with assistance from a seemingly unknown and perhaps ghostly force, Sid learns something about herself—when the cause is right she never retreats.

The interaction between Sid and her client, a tobacco-spitting, chair-rocking old codger more interested in the shine on his shoes than the dust on his furniture, once again brings small-town America to life.

Through Alpha, Cort learns that women, both real and artificial, don't always do as anticipated or as programmed. When Alpha refuses to clean the bathroom until Cort provides waterproof gloves to protect her hands, Cort thinks there may be a few flaws in her design.
Perhaps he uploaded too much feminine literature to her database.

After seeing the robot's photo in a tabloid, Zoe and her manager devise a plan to catch a stalker using Alpha as the bait. Cort and Alpha move into Zoe's compound. EXTRACT FROM CRASH INTO DARKNESS

On Amber’s fourth trip back up the steps, laden with food supplies, she heard a crack. A crack which stilled the blood in her veins.

She turned slowly, her arms gripping a carton of canned peas, and saw the wall move. It wavered like a fish tail and collapsed in a rush of death water. It frothed and foamed, ripped and tore its way across the room towards Jaden.

“Get out,” she screamed at him.

He dropped the box and started towards her.

But the water moved faster.

It picked him up and threw him across the room sweeping cartons alongside him. His dark head disappeared from sight, and Amber searched frantically for him. She stepped backwards up the steps away from the approaching water. She had to seal off the room.

He had saved her when they had fallen from the boat, and now she remained powerless to help him.

“Jaden,” she shrieked, her voice hoarse and desperate.

The water rushed across her shoes, and she ran up to the door. She turned at the top. How could she ask for the room to be sealed with him still inside? Saturated cartons, cans of food, churned in a soup of bubbling flour and rice slop. “Hold your breath,” she willed him. “Just hold your breath.”

He burst from the swirling waters, his mouth open, sucking in air and sank under again. The water had crept halfway up the stairs. Soon, it would spill into the corridor, and the door wouldn’t shut. Amber couldn’t leave him. She whipped her belt from her jeans, pulled her sweater over her head and tied one sleeve to the buckle. She urged him again to hold his breath and waited, her gaze darting about for a glimpse of his dark head.

He erupted into the air, and she threw the line. He saw it coming and reached out before disappearing. A sharp tug on the belt, and she pulled with a strength born of desperation. Hand over hand, she hauled the line, fighting against the current.

The line slackened, and Jaden dragged himself from the water, climbing up the last steps on his hands and knees. She bent down and grabbed his arm.

He stood, and they staggered together out the door. Jaden kicked the door shut while Amber grabbed the radio from her pocket and shouted into it. “Seal cargo door one. Now.”

The door locked down, water tight and she collapsed onto the ground beside Jaden.

“Dear Jesus in Heaven, I almost saw him that time,” spluttered Jaden. He glanced at her half-naked state and pulled off his jacket, and then paused. He took her arm and stared down at the criss-cross of scars. He looked up at her.

“Please don’t ask,” she said. “That’s my past.”

The sympathy in his eyes felt almost unbearable, but then he blinked as if coming back from a far off place. “An unclothed woman on a prison ship,” he said, “is probably not a good idea..."

Common Threads An Unique Literary Experience

Storybook Acres Press Presents…

An Interview With

Lisa Dunster Moeller

Creator of Common Threads Journals

What are the ‘Common Threads Journals’?

They are a unique line of journals that were created as a tool to help people connect with one another. Each journal has a unique theme, but all are meant to be shared and have more than one owner. They use journal writing as a way to identify the common threads we share with the people around us, and then allow us to connect with those people by sharing the journals and our thoughts and feelings that are contained within them.

How did you come up with such an original concept?

It was a combination of things. The driving force behind the idea was my desire to help two friends who were suffering from the pain caused by divorce. Having been through a divorce myself, I expected that I would be able to relate to them in ways that others couldn't and could perhaps even help by sharing my experience with them. What I learned was that although I could truly empathize with their pain, the advice I had to offer wasn't always what they needed to hear. It occurred to me then that what I really needed was a way to collect all the things other people had said to me during that difficult time in my own life and pass those bits of wisdom on to them in a way that allowed them to choose what they wanted o n their own terms. That’s essentially how the fist Common Threads Journal came to be.

You have expressed your concern over a “great disconnect” in our society. What do you mean by that?

It is my way of describing the barriers that we each create in order to shield ourselves from the daily assault of negative images we receive through the media. It's something we all do to keep the bad news from taking over our hearts and minds, but it also causes us to isolate ourselves.

Why do you think this is happening?

As a society we have become desensitized. The unfortunate result of that protection mechanism is that we become disconnected from more than just the negative images in the media; we begin to disconnect from our neighbors and community members (both locally and globally). After awhile it becomes easy to ignore and pass up the opportunities we have to make small positive changes in the lives of others.

How do you hope Common Threads Journals can help overcome this problem?

I believe that even the smallest of solutions can have an impact on the biggest of problems. I certainly don't expect to fix the world with this idea, but I do believe the journals will help people to create connections with one another that inspire them to express caring and compassion instead of fear or indifference.

What is the most important message you want these journals to convey to others?

We all have something to contribute to this world; reaching out to others, connecting and sharing a piece of your own life story is something we all can do to help bridge the gap of the "great disconnect."

Do you have plans for more journals?

Yes, I have plans for several more journals in the series. I am currently working on a journal for recording life's milestone moments. After that, I want to create a journal for creating lasting connections between loved ones who are separated by distance.
